Cala Llombards: A Beachside Haven Off the Beaten Path

Tucked away in the southeast of Mallorca, near the quaint village of Es Llombards and about 10 kilometres from Santanyi, you’ll find Cala Llombards. This stunning cove beach is a tiny slice of paradise, stretching just 55 metres long but extending nearly 150 metres deep towards the pine trees and bushes. This secluded beach is framed by steep cliffs and rocky areas, as well as pine trees and scrubs. The sand is white and soft, and the water is beautifully crystal clear, perfect for snorkeling.

Cala Llombards is a popular beach for locals as well as tourists, particularly Germans, many of whom rent luxury holiday villas nearby. This beach is for relaxing, not a party beach or one with outside activities. You can still see some of the small fisherman’s houses along this cove beach, which adds to its charm.

You can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas, and there are a couple of outdoor showers and basic toilets. There are no water activities for hire at Cala Llombards. There is only one beach bar here that offers good snacks and drinks, so it’s recommended to bring some food and drinks along with you.

Navigating Your Way to Cala Llombards

Cala Llombards is easily accessed by car or bicycle off the main road that connects with the village of Es Llombards. From Santanyi, it’s only a 10–15 minute drive and from nearby Ses Salines about 15–20 minutes. No tourist buses or public transport come through here, part of what keeps this gem of a beach more local. You can anchor your boat off of Cala Llombards, but head to Cala Figuera for full port amenities. There is a paid parking lot at the entrance to the beach.

Please note that there is no lifeguard on duty at Cala Llombards but there is an announcement board available with all emergency numbers. Wheelchair accessibility is very limited to get onto the beach but the walk from the car park to the beach is not too long.

Things to do on Cala Llombards

Snorkeling is the number 1 water sport for this beach that boasts crystal clear blue waters. There are some rocky outcroppings that make for good diving spots. You can also take a nice walk along the unmarked trails that run along the cliffs. If you make your way towards Cala Santanyi, you will pass by the famous Es Pontàs, a big rock that has been worn away by the elements to create a natural bridge formation. It’s quite spectacular.

Dining Near Cala Llombards

There is only one small beach bar on Cala Llombards, where you can find snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. The nearest restaurant is 1 kilometre away in the tiny village of Es Llombards. Otherwise, you will find several restaurants in Cala Santanyi, a small resort town very nearby, and a good selection of restaurants in Santanyi offering a fantastic range of cuisines and price points from which to choose.

Another nice option is lunch on the cliffs of Cala Figuera, a nearby port and old fisherman’s village.

Accommodation Near Cala Llombards

Camping is not allowed on Cala Llombards and there is only one small hotel in the village Es Llombards. Vacation rentals are very popular in this area, most of the housing around here is specifically for seasonal renting.

A short drive away, Cala Santanyi or further afield to the larger resort, offering many beach hotels in Cala D’or, have small to mid-size hotels in all price ranges. Many of these cater directly to families and have pools. The town of Santanyi also has some of the top hotels in Mallorca if you are looking for something more upmarket.

Slightly further afield is the Rural Hotel Es Turo, in Ses Salines, a gorgeous, quiet boutique hotel in the heart of the Ses Salines natural park.

Exploring Around Cala Llombards

This southeast corner of Mallorca is home to some spectacular scenery, including the Ses Salines Natural Park, a sanctuary for birds and native flora, the rugged coastland, and the surrounding salt flats. The rural town of Ses Salines has wonderful shops that feature local Mallorcan products, including, of course, salt, such as Llum de Sal and Flor de Sal.

The quaint, rural, inland village of Santanyi is worth a visit to explore its art galleries, shops, restaurants, and lovely streets. The town really comes alive during its Saturday market that is more for shopping than for food. Cala d’Or is another lovely group of cove beaches that are more resort in feeling, with more beachfront architecture and amenities onsite.
