Welcome to the tranquil haven of Cala Mesquida, a beach resort nestled amidst the sand dunes on the northeastern coast of Mallorca. This picturesque locale is a short distance from the charming town of Capdepera, and the vibrant town of Artá. Recognizing the untouched natural beauty of the area, the Balearic government declared it an “area of special interest” in 1991. Today, Cala Mesquida is celebrated as one of Mallorca’s top 20 beaches.

Cala Mesquida’s beach stretches approximately 350 meters, forming a bay-like shape with its fine-grain sand. The water is pristine and transparent, although the winds can occasionally stir up waves and currents. This beach is a hit among tourists, especially those from Germany and Britain, and is a favorite among families who enjoy the easy access and expansive area of sand and sea. You can rent loungers and umbrellas, and there’s a restaurant and a snack bar serving delicious food and beverages. However, facilities are basic, with showers available but no changing stations, and water sports activities are limited to diving, snorkeling, and paddle boats.

Ensuring Your Safety and Accessibility

Cala Mesquida is easily accessible by car, with ample parking available at the beach and on nearby streets. However, the last 200 meters to the beach require walking, making wheelchair accessibility challenging. If you’re staying at one of the beachside apartments or hotels, a paved walkway leads you right to the beach’s edge. You can also arrange for buses and taxis from Capdepera or Artá.

The beach has a lifeguard station, and water conditions are clearly marked due to the frequent swells that create some of the island’s biggest waves. Emergency contacts are clearly displayed on the main sign, and a pharmacy is available in the resort village of Cala Mesquida. The water is shallow and expansive, perfect for children to play, but be cautious of larger waves on windy days. Facilities are basic, with showers available but no toilets or changing stations.

Exploring the Area Around Cala Mesquida

Cala Mesquida is enveloped by stunning countryside. The closest town, Capdepera, is a charming rural hillside town dating back to medieval times. As one of the easternmost towns in all of Mallorca, it offers beautiful views and charming shops and restaurants. A visit to the Capdepera Castle is a fun activity for both kids and adults, although the uphill walk can be challenging in the heat.

Capdepera Golf is a top-notch 18-hole course with excellent greens and facilities, including a clubhouse and a good restaurant.

Just a few kilometers down the road from Capdepera, you’ll find Artá, the largest town on the east side of Mallorca. Despite increasing tourism, it remains traditional and low-key. One of the main attractions in Artá is the Santuari de Sant Salvador, a fortified church dating back to the 14th century, although much of it was renovated in the 19th century. Artá’s rich historical past makes for a great day of sightseeing.

To escape the heat, head into the cliffs for a visit to the Cuevas del Drac or the Cuevas d’Artá, both an easy drive from Cala Mesquida. Guided tours take you into these underground caves to explore the spectacular stalagmites and stalactites.
